MARCELLE FERRON

Marcelle Ferron est née à Louiseville en 1924 et s’est éteinte en 2001 à Montréal. Elle étudie à l’École des beaux-arts de Québec de 1942 à 1944, avant de s’établir à Montréal et d’occuper une place enviable dans le mouvement des Automatistes, elle qui joint sa voix au manifeste Refus global en 1948. En 1961, elle remporte la médaille d’argent à la Biennale de São Paulo. En 1972, elle est reçue membre de l’Académie royale des arts du Canada et en 1983, elle obtient le prestigieux prix Paul-Émile-Borduas. Au cours de sa carrière, l’artiste prendra part à de nombreuses expositions collectives d’envergure au Canada et à l’étranger. Le Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal présentera deux rétrospectives de son œuvre : Marcelle Ferron de 1945 à 1970, en 1970, et Marcelle Ferron, une rétrospective 1945-1997, en 2000. Avec sa longue et prolifique carrière artistique, Marcelle Ferron s’est imposée comme l’une plus importantes artistes de la modernité québécoise.

Marcelle FERRON

Marcelle Ferron was born to Louiseville, Quebec, in 1924 and died in 2001 in Montreal. Following his expulsion from the École des beaux-arts de Québec, where she studied with Jean-Paul Lemieux, she moved to Montreal and became friends with the artists of the movement Automatiste, those same who will lead painting to abstraction. Cosignatory in 1948 of the Refus Global, with Paul-Émile Borduas, Jean Paul Riopelle, Françoise Sullivan, Pierre Gauvreau, Fernand Leduc and Marcel Barbeau, Marcelle Ferron Ferron has become one of the most important artists of the Quebec modernity. The works of Marcelle Ferron’s works have appeared, in particular in the exhibition The Automatiste Revolution: Montreal 1941-1960, organized in 2009 by the Varley Art Gallery of Markham, in Ontario and then presented at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, United States, in 2010, as well as at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton in 2012, and at the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon , in 2013.
