RITA LETENDRE

Rita Letendre est née à Drummondville en 1928 d’un père québécois et d’une mère abénaquise. Après des études en arts, son œuvre évolue au contact de différents mouvements artistiques, dont celui des Automatistes de Montréal. Ses nombreuses expositions présentées au Canada ainsi qu’à l’étranger ont fait d’elle une artiste incontournable de l’après-guerre au Canada. Rita Letendre reçoit le Prix du Gouverneur général du Canada en 2010, la plus haute distinction accordée aux artistes en arts visuels au pays, ainsi que le Prix Paul-Émile-Borduas en 2016. L’artiste s’éteint le 20 novembre 2021 à Toronto à l’âge de 93 ans.

Rita Letendre was born in Drummondville, Québec in 1928 to a Québécois father and Abenaki mother. Her work evolved along with her studies in art and association with various artistic movements, including that of Paul-Émile Borduas’ automatistes. Her many exhibitions in Canada and abroad—she spent time in France, Italy, Israel and the United States before finally settling in Toronto in 1970—have made her a key artist of the country’s postwar period. She is the recipient of a 2010 Governor General’s Award, the highest honour granted to Canadian visual artists and the Prix Paul-Émile-Borduas in 2016.
