For the beginning of fall 2021, Lacerte contemporary art is pleased to present the exhibition “Empire” by artist Rafael Sottolichio.

The exhibition “Empire” arose out of a desire to question the role of power and money in culture, as well as their impact on everyday life and artistic creation. According to the artist, recent art history can be interpreted as the result of great empires justifying their importance through culture. In this new series, Sottolichio explores the historical relationship between art and power. He confronts the many realities evoked in the paintings by juxtaposing them, by making them strange, by constructing a poetic arrangement to provoke a reflection. The subjects are varied, inspired by images taken in spectacular places that highlight the relationship between art and money.

Rafael Sottolichio was born in Santiago, Chile, and arrived in Montreal in 1976. After university studies in Santiago and Montreal, he has practiced painting professionally since 1996. Rafael Sottolichio has participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Quebec and Canada . His works are part of numerous public and private collections.
