Charles-Frédérick OUELLET

Charles-Frédérick Ouellet was born in Chicoutimi and lives and works in Quebec City.

Ouellet’s work explores the enduring dynamics of resistance and change in the social and physical landscapes around him. With an abiding interest in the peripheral stories of history and immaterial cultural heritage, Ouellet’s photographic output grapples with his deep concerns around the issues facing us today.

His first cycle, Le Naufrage / The Shipwreck (2010–2016), explores the St. Lawrence River and the symbolic figure of the fisherman. The project marks the beginning of a cycle based on historic documents and bodies of water. Since 2014, he has been working on a photography project that examines the various representations of borders through the story of the forgotten coureur de bois Louis Joliet (1645–1700).

Ouellet has exhibited in over 15 venues around Quebec (VU, Regart, Espace F, La Maison de la Culture Frontenac, Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie en Gaspésie), and internationally in Scotland (Street Level Photoworks), France, and Greece. He has been awarded grants from the Conseil des arts et lettres de Québec (CALQ), Office franco-québécois pour la jeunesse (OFQJ), and Quebec City’s Première Ovation. His work is found in several public and private collections.

Charles-Frédérick Ouellet is represented in Quebec by Galerie Lacerte Art Contemporain and in Europe by Hans Lucas Agency.
